Before any dynasty, before any recorded king, the Kathmandu Valley was — by its own telling — a great lake. The Swayambhu Purana (स्वयम्भू पुराण), the Sanskrit Buddhist text whose oldest surviving manuscript dates to 1558 CE but which recycles a far older myth, tells the story in 203 verses: a vast water called Nagavasa-hrid (नागवास हृद), "the lake that is the abode of the Nagas," with a self-arisen light burning on a lotus at its center.

The Sword of Manjushri

The bodhisattva Manjushri (मञ्जुश्री), seeing the light from the far north, travelled south in human form as the teacher Manjudeva. Wanting pilgrims to reach the lotus, he surveyed the shore and found its lowest rim at Kachchapala Parvata — "Turtle Mountain" — in the south. With his sword Chandrahasa (चन्द्रहास) he cut through the rock. The waters rushed out toward the Ganges, and the cleft he made is identified with the Chobhar gorge, where the Bagmati still exits the valley today.

The lotus hardened into Swayambhu Hill — first named Vajrakuta, "Diamond Peak." The drained bed became the fertile plain where every subsequent dynasty would build. The lake goddess Khaganana rose from the bed and is worshipped today as Guhyeshvari near Pashupatinath. And Manjushri begged the serpent-kings' pardon: Taksaka departed for the ocean, but Karkotaka was settled in the pond of Taudaha south of Kirtipur — a living shrine to this day.

The Geology Agrees — Mostly

Here is the remarkable part: the valley was indeed a Pleistocene paleo-lake. Sediment cores reveal over 300 metres of lacustrine clay beneath Kathmandu. The lake drained when the outlet at the gorge eroded through — the myth even offers a folk "explanation" for the deep clays, turning a slain demon's flesh to stone and blood to valley soil. Early settlements clustered on the higher lacustrine terraces — the tar — which is exactly where the oldest towns still sit.

A Second Version: Krishna's Son

A parallel Vaishnava legend credits the draining to Pradyumna (प्रद्युम्न), Krishna's son, who released the river-goddess Vagvati — the Bagmati — from a demon, in the age of Krishna's war against Kamsa. Popular retellings bind the story to Krishna cutting the gorge with a thunderbolt. This version gained currency in the late Malla period, and both legends are still told — one from Swayambhu, one from the Bagmati's ghats.

A myth is a memory the land keeps when documents do not exist.

Where Did the Name 'Nepal' Come From?'

  • ◆The sage Ne Muni (ने मुनि) — who dwelt at the confluence of the Bagmati and Vishnumati and protected (pāl) the people: Ne + pāla
  • ◆The cowherd Nepa (नेपा) of the Gopalarajavamshavali — the man whose cow Bahuri revealed Pashupati and whose line became the first dynasty
  • ◆Tibetan records call Nepal Bal-yul (बल-युल), 'the land of wool' — for the valley's ancient sheep and wool economy
  • ◆In Nepal Bhasa: Ne = middle, pa = country — 'the middle country'
  • ◆Lepcha tradition: Ne = holy, pal = cave — 'the holy cave', the land of pilgrimage

The name surfaces in ancient sources before the valley's first dynasty: Kautilya's Arthashastra records Nepali wool blankets selling well in Magadha, and the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang knew the country as Ni-po-lo — describing it, he never entered it, in the 7th century.
