The First Himalayans
Until the 1980s Nepal was thought to have no Stone Age record at all. Then the German archaeologist Gudrun Corvinus surveyed the Dang-Deokhuri valleys in the Siwalik hills and found 23 sites with quartzite hand-axes, cleavers and flakes — the first hard proof of Paleolithic humans in Nepal, of Middle Pleistocene age. Neolithic polished tools followed from the Kathmandu Valley and high mountain valleys. Nepal's deep past was no longer guesswork.
The most dramatic evidence comes from the sky caves of Mustang (मुस्ताङ गुफाहरू) — thousands of chambers cut into cliff faces. In 1995, the Mebrak cave yielded a community burial chamber used c. 400 BCE – 50 CE containing around 30 naturally mummified bodies: the first Himalayan mummies ever found. In 2010, the Samdzong caves gave up ten shaft tombs with 27 individuals — buried in wooden coffins, some with cut marks from systematic secondary burial, one with reparative trepanation on the skull, and, astonishingly, the earliest silk ever found in Nepal, imported from China: proof that the ancient Silk Road ran through these cliffs.
The Shakya Republic
Meanwhile in the Terai, the Shakya (शाक्य) clan-janapada maintained its capital at Kapilavastu (कपिलवस्तु) — identified by Nepali archaeology with Tilaurakot, 27 km west of Lumbini, described as the best-preserved Early Historic city in South Asia. Its most famous son was born in the Lumbini grove: Siddhartha Gautama, whose mother Maya Devi (मायादेवी) bathed in the Puskarni pond before delivery. UNESCO records his birth here at 623 BCE; academic consensus ranges from 563 to 480 BCE.
The Shakyas were a republic — an assembly-governed clan state — flanked by the great kingdom of Kosala and connected northward through Videha/Mithila, the janapada of King Janaka that straddles today's Nepal-India border at Janakpur. The Buddha taught in this world; the Malla clan of Kushinagar received his relics after his passing — and centuries later, kings of Nepal would carry the very title "Malla."
The Pillar of Ashoka — 249 BCE
Three centuries later, Emperor Ashoka made a pilgrimage to the birthplace — and left the single most important written document in Nepalese history. The Rummindei pillar (रुम्मिन्देई स्तम्भ) he erected at Lumbini carries his own words, in Prakrit Brahmi:तीन शताब्दीपछि सम्राट अशोकले लुम्बिनीमा रुम्मिन्देई स्तम्भ उभाए — जसमा उनी आफैंले लेखेका छन्:
"King Devanampiya Piyadasi, in the twentieth year of his reign, came in person and worshipped, because here the Buddha Shakyamuni was born. He had a stone wall built and a stone pillar erected; because the Lord was born here, the village of Lumbini was made tax-free, paying only an eighth share.
— Rummindei pillar inscription, 249 BCE
The pillar was cracked by lightning — noted by the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang around 636 CE — and lost to jungle for centuries before being rediscovered in December 1895 by General Khadga Shamsher Rana. Two more Ashokan pillars lie in the Terai, at Niglihawa and Gotihawa, marking the birthplaces of earlier Buddhas. Around the same era, tradition holds that Ashoka visited the valley itself, raising the four Ashoka stupas at the corners of Patan and, through his daughter Charumati (चारुमति), founding the great stupa at Chabahil.
