Watch Nepal Take Shape

Borders are stories told in ink. These animated diagrams replay the three moments Nepal's map changed most — the conquest ring closing on the Valley, the three Malla courts carving it up, and the treaty that cut a third of the country away.

Prithvi Narayan takes the throne of Gorkha — a modest hill state between the Kaligandaki and Trishuli rivers. His first act is not war but intelligence: mapping trade routes, arming farmers, and drilling a standing army.

Watch a small hill state swallow the Valley and the hills around it in 26 deliberate years. Prithvi Narayan rarely fought battles he hadn't already won with trade blockades, spy networks and marriages — the maps below show the ring closing.

One Valley, one king

Yaksha Malla rules the entire Valley from Bhaktapur — the last king to do so. His death that year hands the kingdom to his sons, and the cracks appear at once.

Yaksha Malla died and his sons split the Valley: Bhaktapur to the elder, Kathmandu to the younger, Patan carved away soon after. Three courts then spent 280 years out-building, out-dancing and out-scheming each other — the rivalry that built today's durbar squares.

Greater Nepal

Nepal at war stretches from the Sutlej river in the west — Kumaon and Garhwal are provinces — through the Terai, to the Teesta in the east. It is the largest state the Himalaya has ever held under one crown.

The Anglo-Nepal War was the moment the East India Company met a hill army that wouldn't break. The battles were brutal stalemates; the treaty was the real defeat. One third of Nepal's territory — the west to the Sutlej, the south to the plain, the east to the Mechi — traded for survival.

नेपाल-अंग्रेज युद्धमा हिमाली सेनाले झुकेन; युद्ध गोर्खालीको कथा भयो, तर सन्धिले नेपालको एक-तिहाइ भूमि लियो।

Geography is deliberately stylized — museum diagrams, not survey maps. Boundaries before the modern era follow chronicles and scholarship; where historians disagree, the diagram follows the consensus view.
