Every dynasty of Nepal traces back to this: a chronicle written in 1389 CE — the Gopalarajavamshavali (गोपालराजवंशावली) — that remembers eight kings who ruled the valley around a thousand years before that chronicle was ever written. They were cow-herders, gopālas, and they are Nepal's first recorded royal house. No inscription or excavation confirms them. They exist because memory, carried in ink, insisted they did.
The Cow Named Bahuri
The chronicle begins with a cow. As the Kali Yuga dawned, the deity Shri Bhringareshvara emerged in the forested valley, and the sage Gautama installed the shrine of Gautameshvara. Then the Gopalas — cow-herding people described as coming from Madhyadesa, the Indian heartland — arrived in the valley. A cow named Bahuri (बाहुरी), belonging to a cowherd called Nepa (नेपा), went daily to the bank of the Bagmati and let her milk flow onto a hole in the ground, worshipping it. The suspicious cowherd dug there — and the self-manifested linga of Pashupati Bhattacharaka emerged from the earth.
On that spot the dynasty took power — and, in the chronicle's own wordplay, the country took its name. Some traditions say the kings of this line were themselves called "Nepa," giving Nepal (नेपाल) its name; others derive it from the sage Ne Muni. Either way, the first dynasty and the nation's name come from the same story.
The Eight Kings
What We Can Trust
Scholars read the Gopals not as eight literal kings but as the collective memory of Nepal's earliest pastoralist communities — a cowherd economy that preceded the great dynasties. Tradition credits them with building the first shrine of Pashupatinath, and places their capital at Matatirtha (मातातीर्थ) — today's Mother's Day pilgrimage site. The dynasty ended when the last king died without an heir, and the buffalo-herding Mahispalas succeeded him — in some tellings, as the adopted heir.
"Nepal's history does not begin with a battle or a treaty. It begins with a cow, a hole in the ground, and a king named after a herd.
