Prithvi Narayan died in 1775, and the kingdom he left was dynastically unstable but territorially hungry. Under the regencies of Queen Rajendra Rajya Laxmi and then the king's uncle Bahadur Shah (बहादुर शाह, 1785–1794), Nepal expanded to its greatest extent: the Teesta river in the east, Kumaon and Garhwal in the west — the map that made Nepal, briefly, the Himalaya's greatest power.

But Rana Bahadur Shah (रणबहादुर शाह), who took personal rule in 1794, was a catastrophe of a king: he killed his own uncle Bahadur Shah, abdicated for his infant son Girvan Yuddha in 1799, fled to Varanasi, signed and then abandoned a treaty with the East India Company — and was beheaded in his own court on 25 April 1806 by his half-brother Sher Bahadur Shah.

The War with China

Nepal's expansion into Tibet provoked the Qing empire twice: the wars of 1788–89 (Treaty of Kerung) and 1791–92, when the imperial general Fuk'anggan marched to within striking distance of Nuwakot. The Treaty of Betrawati (1792) made Nepal a nominal tributary of China with quinquennial missions — a status it maintained with the Qing into the 20th century.

Bhandarkhal and Bhimsen Thapa

The 1806 succession crisis produced the Bhandarkhal massacre (भान्दारखाल पर्व) — 93 people killed over two weeks, including the king of Palpa. From it rose Bhimsen Thapa (भीमसेन थापा), Nepal's first non-royal Mukhtiyar (chief minister), who would lead the country into the war with Britain.
