By 2025 Nepal's problem was not the constitution but what the constitution had failed to deliver: opportunity. A quarter of the national income was money sent home by workers abroad; on peak days more than 2,000 Nepalis left for the Gulf and Malaysia; corruption cases against ministers trended online while youth unemployment stayed brutal. When, on 4 September 2025, the government — acting on a Supreme Court order — banned 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp and X, for failing to register locally, the trigger met the tinder.

The 'Gen Z' protests began on 8 September 2025 in Kathmandu and other cities — students and young workers, organized through Discord and encrypted chats precisely because the platforms they used were banned. When police opened fire on the crowds, at least 19 protesters were killed on the first day. The next day the movement stopped asking for the ban to be lifted: it demanded the government's resignation. Demonstrators broke into Singha Durbar, the seat of government, and set fire to the Federal Parliament building. Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned. By the time the smoke cleared, at least 72 people had died in the unrest.'

President Ram Chandra Poudel, invoking the constitution's crisis provisions, appointed Sushila Karki — a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the first woman to hold that office — as interim prime minister on 12 September 2025, with the protest movement's representatives part of the negotiation. Her mandate was single-purpose: dissolve the House, restore order, and hold an election. The House was dissolved; the election was fixed for 5 March 2026. The army mediated between the protesters and the palace, and by common consent the government's caretaker appointments included figures the movement could trust.

5 March 2026 — The Election

The election for a new 275-member House of Representatives was held on 5 March 2026. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) — the anti-establishment party founded in 2022 by a television host — won a landslide: 182 of 275 seats. The parties of the old order were reduced to single figures. On 27 March 2026, Balendra ('Balen') Shah — the hip-hop artist, structural engineer and Kathmandu mayor who had become the face of the movement — took the oath as prime minister.

"

"The generation that inherited the peace did not inherit its dividends. This election is their invoice."
