On 2 June 1936, in Kathmandu — at the house of Dharma Bhakta Mathema in Om Bahal — a handful of young men founded the Nepal Praja Parishad (नेपाल प्रजा परिषद), the country's first organized political opposition: Tanka Prasad Acharya as president, Dashrath Chand, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Jiwan Raj Sharma and Ramhari Sharma. Their program was democracy, and their enemy was 90 years of hereditary rule.

The conspiracy was betrayed — by Ramji Joshi, for a reward of Rs 5,000. Arrests began 18 October 1940; on 19 January 1941 the sentences came. On 24 January, Shukraraj Shastri (शुक्रराज शास्त्री) was hanged from a tree at Pachali, Teku, and Dharma Bhakta Mathema (धर्मभक्त माथेमा) at midnight at Sifal. On 28 January, Dashrath Chand (दशरथ चन्द) and Gangalal Shrestha (गङ्गालाल श्रेष्ठ) — still a teenager — were shot at Shobha Bhagawati on the banks of the Bishnumati.

The Movement Grows Abroad

The movement emigrated to India. The Biratnagar jute mill strike of 4 March 1947 — led by Girija Prasad Koirala and joined by B.P. Koirala on 9 March — produced mass arrests, a 27-day hunger strike and Gandhi's intercession. B.P. Koirala (विश्वेश्वरप्रसाद कोइराला) organized the Nepali National Congress in 1947, which became the Nepali Congress in 1950. Pushpa Lal Shrestha, Gangalal's brother, founded the Communist Party of Nepal in 1949. The Rana regime's own modernization — schools, its own first college — had produced its own gravediggers.

1950–51: The Revolution

The armed revolution (सात सालको क्रान्ति) began in November 1950 — the Nepali Congress Mukti Sena seized district towns across the Terai and hills. In Kathmandu, King Tribhuvan (त्रिभुवन) — who had watched four martyrs die in silence — took refuge in the Indian Embassy on 6 November 1950 and flew to Delhi, refusing the Ranas' demand that he abdicate. The Ranas crowned his four-year-old grandson Gyanendra in his place; India refused to recognize the arrangement.

The Delhi Accord — February 1951

Brokered by India, the Delhi Accord (दिल्ली सम्झौता) of early February 1951 ended the hereditary premiership: a Rana–Congress coalition cabinet under King Tribhuvan, and a promise of elections to a Constituent Assembly. Tribhuvan returned on 15 February; on 18 February 1951 — still celebrated as Democracy Day (प्रजातन्त्र दिवस) — the king proclaimed the end of the 104-year regime. B.P. Koirala took the Home portfolio on 21 February.
