Amshuverma (अंशुवर्मा) rose as Mahasamanta — chief vassal — under King Shivadeva I, then took actual sovereign power (605–621). He was the first ruler to bear the title Pashupati-Bhattaraka, "Lord of Pashupati," and he ruled from Kailashkut Bhawan (कैलाशकुट भवन), a three-courtyard palace at Hadigaun spanning roughly 470 feet, whose top floor could seat ten thousand — described with wonder by the Chinese envoy Wang Xuance.
He wrote a grammar of Shabda-vidya (शब्दविद्या) — and was praised by name, six centuries later, in a Chinese pilgrim's account of Nepal. His coins — a winged lion, the legend Shri Amsurvarma, a bull on the reverse — circulated across the valley.
Bhrikuti — the Princess Who Converted a King
Most Tibetan accounts make Bhrikuti (भृकुटी) Amshuverma's daughter; the Chinese wife of Songtsen Gampo, Wencheng, arrived in 641; and both queens carried Buddhism into Tibet. Bhrikuti — the Bal-mo-bza' Khri-btsun, "the Nepali royal lady" — is regarded as an incarnation of Green Tara, and is credited with bringing the sacred Jowo image and Newar craftsmen to Lhasa, and with helping found the Jokhang temple and the Red Palace, predecessor of the Potala.
"Such a mythological interpretation discredits in no way the historical likelihood of such a marriage.
— David Snellgrove, Tibetan historian

Narendradeva (नरेन्द्रदेव) — restored to the throne with Tibetan military backing in 641, according to the Tang court's own records — ruled 643–679. In 645 the pilgrim Xuanzang's great geography of Asia described Nepal from hearsay:नरेन्द्रदेव तिब्बती सहायताले सिंहासनमा फर्के।
"It produces red copper, the Yak and the Mingming bird. In commerce they use coins made of red copper. They are unlearned, but skilful in the arts. There are about 2,000 priests, who study both the Great and the Little Vehicle. The king is a Kshattriya, and belongs to the family of the Licchavas.
— Xuanzang, Ta-T'ang Si-yu-ki, Book VII (645 CE)
In 648, when a usurper named Arunasva attacked a Tang envoy mission in Tirhut, the envoy Wang Xuance returned with 7,000 Nepalese and 1,200 Tibetan troops and crushed him — the best-documented military collaboration of Nepal, Tibet and China in the ancient world.
